10 Video Game Film Adaptations In Production Right Now

2. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Naughty Dog's Playstation-exclusive franchise, Uncharted, features fortune hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake in his quest for acquiring-things-that-he-really-shouldn't-as-it-will-inevitably-rub-someone-up-the-wrong-way. Having traipsed through the Amazon in search of El Dorado, battled across snow-capped mountains in Nepal wearing nothing but jeans and a shirt, we can see that the adaptation material in this series is ready-made: the witty dialogue, detailed characterisation and diverse environments have already been compiled. It is the responsibility of the producers, however, to effectively translate this existing material onto the screen without lacking the charm that has contributed to the game series' success. The adventure genre has been prominent in Film for decades. Many critics and gamers alike have commented upon Drake's similarities to Indiana Jones, with his natural infusion of contemporary values. Uncharted's unique aspect into the world of antiquity acquisition, as opposed to being just another one of 'those' films, will, hopefully, set it aside from the other films within this genre. Avi Arad is currently producing the film and hopes to reassert the value of the game-movie genre. He believes that "Converting games to film hasn't been done yet successfully, though Resident Evil did very well... I think Uncharted will be very successful. It's a father and son game," he explained to Kotaku. "There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft... there are many countries in the world that realised they're being robbed and they're trying to recoup these important pieces. Now, the script has a lot of character I think that has a shot at being the first one ." Debate over who could possibly take on the role of 'Nate' Drake subsequent to Nolan North's stellar voice and motion-capture performance is an ongoing debate. Fan favourites vary from Castle's Nathan Fillion to Mark Wahlberg, who was initially rumoured to be taking on the role of Drake, the role of which is yet to be revealed. The film itself has an initial release date of 2016, though this is sure to be finalised in the future.
