10 Video Game Final Bosses Who Refused To Die
1. Absolute Virtue & Pandemonium Warden - Final Fantasy XI
Since it’s an MMO, there isn’t really a “final boss” of Final Fantasy XI but you don’t get anything worse than the game’s two High Notorious Monsters.
Absolute Virtue had an estimated HP of around 100,000 when it was dropped into the world of Final Fantasy XI. It was clear that Square Enix had no intention of making it a fight that players could realistically win.
As clans found clever tricks to make things easier, Square patched them out. Battles over 30 hours long were reported by some players, at which point Virtue would restore half of its HP.
When news stories broke that a clan of players that had spent 18 hours battling Pandemonium Warden, and that several of its members vomited or fainted from exhaustion, Square Enix were forced to act to avoid bad press.
Both of the bosses were patched to be easier to take on and given spawn time limits of two hours, severely reducing the amount of time players could invest into one given fight. In a weird way though, this imposed a new challenge and set of disappointments when you worked the boss down over the course of 120 minutes and didn’t quite finish it off before the time was up.
They’re still an impossible feat that few can say they’ve beaten at this point, but for several years they were quite literally considered un-killable.
