8. Mafia II
Mafia II is one of the most underrated games of the last generation, and one of the best crime stories of all time. The tale of Vito Scaletta as he rises to power in the criminal underworld with the help of his childhood friend Joe is amazing, but it only works so well because these two central characters feel like a real, dysfunctional family.
However while Joe and Vito are as thick as thieves, the former's explosive and erratic behaviour has a habit of getting them both in hot water when it comes to their criminal enterprise.
Consequently after a series of botched jobs and double crosses they're forced to pay off a debt as tensions between the Falcone and Vinci crime families increase. However while shaking down a business it's revealed that Vito is unknowingly working for the man who killed his father, later murdering him and kicking off a war between the different gangs in the process.
Fortunately, Vinci offers the two a lifeline and brokers a deal to spare Vito - now wanted by just about everyone in the city - if he kills Falcone.
Vito quickly gets the job done to save the people he cares about - but at the last minute it's revealed that sparing Joe wasn't part of the deal, and the game ends while you passively watch your friend being taken away to his unknown fate.
