10 Video Game Finales That Left You Speechless

2. SOMA

Mafia 2
Frictional Games

Waking up in a decaying and desolate underwater lab, formerly home to the last vestiges of humanity after an apocalyptic event wiped out most life on Earth, you spend the majority of SOMA figuring out a way to save the human race from complete extinction.

Unfortunately, the planet itself is beyond repair and there are no resources that will allow you to escape anywhere in the flesh. However, soon you realise that while your body might be doomed, your conscience can still live on as a separate entity...

With your mind downloaded into a computer system, the later part of the title encourages you to build an 'ark' that can hold human consciousness in a virtual world and blast it into space.

This is accomplished by traversing the station and finding the required components, but in the process you have to occasionally transfer your own consciousness to different bodies and machines in order to access certain areas or resources.

The finale reveals that this transfer was more akin to a copy however, and that by moving from body to body you've essentially birthed other versions of yourself (who are just as real as you are) into existence.

Unfortunately for you, that means when you launch the ark and copy yourself in, it's a different version of you that gets to enjoy eternity in peace, while the 'real', original you (and your copies) are left to rot on a dying planet.
