10 Video Game Heroes Way Worse Than The Villain

3. Disco Elysium – Harrier Du Bois

Shadow Of The Colossus
Microsoft Windows

During the introduction we mentioned that sometimes there isn’t a clear cut villain in our games. Sometimes our protagonist has to fight against the world, the circumstances, even their own self in the form of personal demons. Well, no one has fought more personal demons than Disco Elysium’s amnesiac, alcoholic cop, Harrier Du Bois.

Waking up from a speed and alcohol fuelled slumber than has royally screwed his reputation, Du Bois finds himself amidst an investigation of murder, conspiracy and corporate meddling. But, everyone in Revachol is a piece of s**t, you might say. Although true, that doesn’t justify Harrier’s actions, particularly as a seemingly hard working, if not slightly unfocused detective.

Your opposition is the likes of brutish worker gangs, drug dealers, corporate bosses and your own police force, laughing at your mess. Yet, instead of proving everyone wrong, and without any player choice, Du Bois’ body will do its best to make matters worse. Whether his literal brain is telling him he doesn’t want to remember the night before, or nervous system is begging him for more speed, he is far from the hero he pretends to the world to be.
