10 Video Game Moments That Made You Cry Like A Baby
6. Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons - ...And Then There Was One
Little-known indie-platformer Brothers was one of our Games of the Year last year, and for very good reason. Instead of just doing yet another twee 2D side-scroller that have now flooded the indie sector of gaming, Brothers opted to tell a neat, almost Tolkien-esque tale of two children (one slightly older) who were journeying across through a fantastical land to recover a cure for their father's illness. What makes Brothers stand out though is its control scheme, which splits the controller in half and allocates the left triggers and stick to one brother, and the right to the other. Controlling two characters simultaneously does take some getting used to, but therein lies the appeal, as you'll soon be asked to navigate two puzzle-filled pathways at once, or alternating your grip on a cliff-edge to scale it effectively. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zT34_ackuE Where everything comes full circle though, is at the end of the game when the older brother has suffered a mortal wound, meaning it's over to the younger to both bury him and make the journey back alone. The act in itself is a very slow, draining process, the effects of which have a strange, sombre feeling in real life as you feel genuine loss thanks to your controller having a half that no longer responds.
