10 Video Game Moments That Shouldn't Have Worked But Did
2. Where's Snake? - Metal Gear Solid: Sons Of Liberty
Leading up to Metal Gear Solid 2's release, all marketing material featured Solid Snake as the protagonist. For this reason, players safely expected a continuation of the grouchy merc's story.
But after the prologue, players found themselves taking control of a different hero called Raiden. For many, not playing as Snake wasn't just disappointing but an utter betrayal since MGS2 didn't offer what was advertised.
But as is often the case with Hideo Kojima, the acclaimed director didn't make this decision lightly. This drastic change in direction wasn't done for shock value but to mirror the plot and themes. Like Raiden, players are thrust into a confusing mission where they're expected to act like Snake, despite not understanding the full picture.
Ironically, moving the story away from Snake makes him more iconic, since he's perceived by Raiden and others as a mythical figure capable of achieving the impossible.
This infamous bait-and-switch has gotten better with age, since Raiden's bond with Snake has been expanded in later instalments. Better still, Raiden has developed into an enthralling character of his own and led his own games, which were universally acclaimed.
Even though this switcheroo could've been a massive misstep for the franchise, it was an absolute masterstroke.
