10 Video Game Moments That Were Utterly Patronising
7. Hold Your Pose - Xbox Kinect
It's hard to think of the Xbox Kinect as anything other than obvious attempt at a quick cash-grab in hindsight. Noticing the huge success the Nintendo Wii and it's motion controls had enjoyed following the system's release in 2006, Microsoft introduced their very own version for the Xbox 360 in 2010.
The Kinect used depth-sensing through infrared light to create pixel-perfect images that the system could use to distinguish the actions a user was performing, thus removing the need for a remote and birthing the tagline: 'you are the controller'.
The system ran fine for its time, but the decision to make selecting anything from the dashboard take up to three seconds is still easily one of the most patronising features in console history.
To select anything, players had to hold a pose to allow the system to find them and then hover their pointer over whatever game or app they were trying to select until a timer had completely filled. Obviously this is a good idea in practice, accidentally selecting the wrong tab because a user had moved their in the wrong direction would be infuriating, however the timer lasts way beyond the point of reason, and feels more like Microsoft going out of their way to say they don't trust users working out their system on their own.
What's more, this timer cannot be altered at all by users, no matter how many hours they invest or how many icons they select and just makes the whole experience feel so slow.
