10 Video Game Moments That Were Utterly Patronising
6. A Quarter Of The Game Is A Tutorial?! - The Karate Kid
Speaking of cash-grabs...
The Karate Kid is a video game developed by Atlus for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and was released back in 1987 hot on the heels of the success of the first two films in the franchise. The game is a blatant attempt at trying to make a quick buck from the two films, with unrefined controls and mechanics and a serious lack of any original content when it comes to the storyline, which is simply a rehashing of the two films' plots.
However, what might be the most insulting thing about the game is the fact that pretty much a quarter of the game is made up of glorified tutorials.
The Karate Kid only features four levels, themed around the four major locations from the first two films, with the first one being set during the tournament that Daniel wins in the original. The opponents players face are painfully easy to beat, the pacing is slowed down to a ridiculously easy level and even the supposed 'boss' of the level is easily beatable by simply standing in place and kicking continuously.
'Patronising' is the only word that can be used to describe being a quarter of the way into a game and still being forced to face off against opponents that are little more than a walking tutorial.
