It feels like a lifetime ago that Hideo Kojima announced a film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid was in development, breaking the news in 2006.

Initially aiming for a 2011 release date, many names were floated for this project from Kurt Wimmer to Paul Thomas Anderson, with Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter also submitting a pitch. Uwe Boll also confirmed an interest in directing but this idea was thankfully dismissed in no uncertain terms by Kojima.

The project was postponed indefinitely back in 2010, with producer Mike De Luca confirming that Konami was worried a bad film would reflect poorly on MGS.

Kojima later expressed scepticism at the viability of an adaptation in March 2012, advising “If it were to be made into a movie it would have to be something completely new”.

Development didn’t stop there however and in 2014, Sony continued work on this adaptation with his involvement, signing on Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct and later confirming Jay Basu as screenplay writer.

Even after Kojima left Konami in 2015, he remained involved with the project and Vogt-Roberts confirmed his vision for the film in August 2018 with the intention of securing an R-Rating, advising “It’s about doing it for a price so you can make the riskier, balls-to-the-wall, Kojima-san version of it.”

Confirming the draft script was completed in December 2019, it does appear that progress is finally being made but considering the long history involved here, fans have every reason to be sceptical that this will ever release.
