10 Video Game Movies You Won't Believe Are In Development
2. Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat has seen numerous adaptations over the last 20 years, spanning across television shows, animated films (One releasing this year) and two live-action films, Mortal Kombat and MK Annihilation back in 1995 and 1997 respectively.
Originally contracted for three films, plans for this third entry were subsequently cancelled after Annihilation’s commercial and critical failure.
Initially owned by Midway Games, Warner Bros obtained the MK licence in 2009 after Midway filed for bankruptcy and outside of recent games, plans for a new film have been in place since 2010.
Pitched by Kevin Tancharoen after making a short fan-film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, he was then hired by Warner Bros to direct a feature-length film to reboot the franchise but bowed out in 2013 after production suffered with budget constraints.
Since then, James Wan and Simon McQuoid took over producer and directing responsibilities respectively and the script saw completion in February 2019. Filming has since been completed and Warner Bros have confirmed a release date of January 15th 2021.
Promising an R Rating and the inclusion of the trademark Fatalities, there’s a lot to look forward to with this new adaptation.
