10 Video Game Protagonists Who Were Doomed From The Start

7. Tidus - Final Fantasy X

Persona 3
Square Enix

If ever there was a poster boy for "did not sign up for this nonsense", it would be Tidus from FFX. The guy just wanted to play Blitzball, dammit. But instead, a giant eldritch god-whale thing named Sin shows up and destroys his home of Zanarkand. Tidus then wakes up in the world of Spira and gets roped into helping Yuna and her gang of oddballs complete the summoning ritual to try and defeat Sin.

Among the many twists and turns the story of FFX throws Tidus' way, the biggest is the truth of Zanarkand. While Zanarkand did exist, the one that Tidus called home was actually a construction created by a race known as the Fayth. The Zanarkand that Tidus, his father, and Auron call home only exists so long as the Fayth are in their endless sleep - but if Sin is defeated - the sleep can finally end. And with it, the dream of Zanarkand.

There's no turning back by this point, which is partly why Tidus takes so long to share this detail with his friends. And why he's so accepting of his death come the closing moments of the story.

Tidus died at the beginning of FFX. He was just the last one to figure that out.
