10 Video Game Protagonists Who Were Doomed From The Start

5. Batman - Batman Arkham Knight

Persona 3
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Arkham Knight is the story about Batman's deconstruction and reconstruction. It breaks down Bruce Wayne as a character to build him back up into the legend that Gotham needs. Unfortunately, this requires Bruce Wayne to die—at least spiritually.

The game outright tells you at the start how it's going to end: "This is how it happened. This is how The Batman died". And whilst there's a bit of a positive bumper to the narrative's conclusion, you do see Batman's legend dragged through the mud in this story. He fails to protect his loved ones multiple times, he is put through the ringer throughout the entire thing and, right at the end, Scarecrow gets what he wants.

Batman unmasks himself in front of the entire world, effectively destroying his legend. And although Scarecrow gets very soundly beaten shortly afterwards, just listening to the goon conversations throughout the city shows that the damage has been done. They aren't scared of him anymore.

Batman enacts the Knightfall protocol, returning to his home and blowing it to smithereens with him and Alfred inside. An indeterminate amount of time later, we see that Batman has become something else... something more. A literal living legend. Just a shame about what it cost to get him there.
