Resident Evil 6 marked the official lowest point for the famed horror series, turning one of Capcom's biggest franchises into a shell of its former self.

Luckily there was a little light at the end of the tunnel when, in a video to fans, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that Capcom had entered active development on a remake of Resident Evil 2. Years of impatiently waiting followed, but even the most diehard of RE fan couldn't have imagined what would be just around the corner.

Resident Evil 2 went further than any previously released remake in Capcom's storied history, including the famed Resident Evil on Nintendo GameCube. Where that release stuck more closely to the DNA of the original, Resident Evil 2 took the general premise and turned everything else on its head.

Gone were the awkward tank controls, replaced with a modern layout both new yet strangely familiar. The RE Engine, first used in Resident Evil 7, afforded a much darker and realistic aesthetic than the colourful RE6, aiding in Capcom's goal to go back to its horror roots.

More importantly, the world was reintroduced to Mr X, leading to a ton of humorous memes and highly entertaining PC mods.
