10 Video Game Remakes & Remasters That Surpassed Expectations
2. Final Fantasy VII Remake
One of the most long gestating remakes in the history of forever, Final Fantasy VII Remake finally launched this year in all its high res glory. Being but part one of a never ending series, no doubt what's here is incredibly ambitious compared to a traditional remake.
Rebuilding an entire game from scratch is one thing, but completely changing the narrative structure is another. Such was the task Square Enix gave themselves in rebuilding Midgar, expanding just about everything in both scale and scope from the first five hours of the original game into a full blown, sixty hour story.
Everything is bigger here, from the size of levels to the depth of dialogue for characters that may have appeared for but a fleeting moment back in 1997. It's no wonder it took Square Enix so many years to finally release it, given how much recorded voice work and orchestral music that can be heard across the campaign, let alone the level of detail in each character's facial animations.
The ambition has to be applauded, even if the end result leaves us wondering how much longer it might take to get the rest of the game in our hot little hands.
