10 Video Game Secret Endings That Weren't Worth It
2. Ending E - NieR: Replicant (2021)
This pick might be a controversial one, not only because of how beloved the NieR series is, but also because of how well this secret ending actually ties into the narrative of the game. However, for as great as Replicant's ending E is, it does have one major flaw that needs to be addressed.
To quickly describe the details to those not in the know, ending E is a secret ending introduced in the remake of NieR: Replicant, that happens after the player's save data gets erased.
By that point, you have already made it through endings A-D and have basically replayed the game four times. The save deletion is meant to emphasize the finality of ending D, and that all hope is essentially lost.
However, if the player chooses to start another game after that, some things will start to change and trigger ending E, which restores the deleted save.
When you experience this ending for the first time, it really does fill you with an unexpected sense of hope and completely subverts the narrative.
But here's the problem: The gameplay up until this point is incredibly repetitive. You're forced to do the same stuff for hours upon hours, four times in a row!
With so much player investment borne from curiosity, it might've been good for one run, but actually reaching ending E isn't such an inspirational tale.
