Only gaming hall of famers like Mario and Sonic can claim to have inspired more sequels than Ace Combat, the undying flight sim series that is about to launch its 17th instalment into the heavens.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown was supposed to touch down this year, but was delayed to 2018 to allow developer Bandai Namco Studios more time to get its multi-platform release off the ground.

Although the Ace Combat series has always been one for the flight sim purists, its in-depth mechanics are usually accompanied by an outlandish storyline, and this instalment will be no exception, set in a world where space elevators exist and Erusea is at war with the Osean Federation.

Skies Unknown was originally announced as a PS4 exclusive and will launch with full support for PlayStation VR, but it's since been cleared for landing on other platforms.
