6. The Game Doesn't Load What's Behind You - Horizon Zero Dawn

Nobody was expecting this game out of Guerrilla 2017. Once known as “the Killzone studio”, it was clearly time for a change. So with that, the greys and the browns were left behind for a certainly more welcoming colour pallet.

But with that also came new styles of perspective and play, as Horizon Zero Dawn looked like an attempt to step in a totally different direction. With this came new challengers for everyone at Guerrilla, and having an open-world game with next to no load times is not only taxing on hardware of the time, but a new feat the team had to overcome.

Their solution? Essentially, don't render what's behind the player. The game's photo mode came later for a reason, as if players were able to unlock the camera from Aloy and look behind her, they would've seen a whole lot of nothing.

A neat trick pulled off by the developers, but not a rare one at that, but thanks to recent footage hitting the internet over the years, we finally got to see in action.
