7. Hiding Load Times On The Train - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Uncharted 2 literally starts with Nathan Drake stuck between a rock and a hard place. It's even the name of the opening chapter. Players are brought back into Drake’s world as he hangs from a train which clings to the edge of a cliff, but how did it end up like this?
Well, the answer is that Drake was subject to repeating parts of an environment in between cutscenes, and just like there is no spoon, there was no train.
Well, kinda.
To account for players taking their sweet time in Chapter 13, or never really moving at all, the developers at Naughty Dog constructed enough surrounding environment so you wouldn't notice.
It's only when guide Drake through specific sections - ones that obscure the player's view or if they have camera control wrestled away - that the environment switches. That tunnel the train barrels through isn’t just an artistic choice, it’s hiding the load into another part of the level.
This in turn progresses you to the next stage of the level seamlessly, and keeps the pulse-pounding action going.
