Aliens: Colonial Marines has become notorious for being a disastrous disappointment, and a lot of this is to do with their presentation of the supposedly fearsome Aliens themselves. In the movies, the Aliens aren't mindless beasts. This is particularly true in the original film, where the Alien is highly intelligent and devastatingly manipulative. In Aliens: Colonial Marines, it's clear that more time and money was spent in making the marketing sneaky, rather than the titular villains themselves. There are several segments in which the Aliens are unable to see you if you aren't making noise. On paper, this sounds like it could be incredibly creepy, cultivating an Amnesia-style atmosphere. Instead, it just means you get to sit still and observe the awful AI barging into walls with stiff animations.
