After a helicopter crash strands journalist Blake Langerman in the middle of the Arizona desert, he finds himself in a struggle for survival against a fanatical cult known as Temple Gate.

Throughout the many harrowing encounters Blake has with the cult’s psychotic devotees, it would be easy to believe that the group, led by the sadistic Father Knoff, is the main antagonist of the game. When the cult meets their grizzly demise at the end of Blake's ordeal, the implication is that the villains have been defeated as the reporter makes his way out of the compound.

However, it turns out that the real antagonist of Outlast 2 was the shady Murkoff Corporation. The same group responsible for the twisted experiments in the first game, documents reveal that they were the ones causing the cult (and Blake) to lose their minds thanks to psychedelic signals seen throughout the game as intense flashes of white light.

Not only did Murkoff use the cult as test subjects for their inhumane experiments, but the tie-in comic series The Murkoff Account also showed that they got away with their actions by eliminating all witnesses - including Blake.

There's no limit to the evil that Murkoff is capable of.
