6. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The break of the millennium brought a birth of almost too many first person shooters, however, as the noughties entered its twilight Activision seized the reigns. They took what had been collectively learned and released this near perfect shooter which championed a genius marriage between skill, reward and chaos.
It was an admirable departure to set it in modern times... far from the popular WWII shooters of the time. These had been on an endless conveyor belt since Saving Private Ryan so this refreshing modern day concept would lead to many of their competitors following suit shortly after.
The story is as high octane, fast paced and fun as its characters. Seriously, once you've heard Captain Price speak and seen his moustache there's really no going back.
Then there's the outstanding multiplayer suite.
Online gameplay was balanced, varied and rewarding in spades. It was like nothing any of us had played until then and combined an arcade style, relentless killing sprees and killstreak mayhem to revolutionise its genre.
It was challenging, social, well designed and set a staggeringly high bar that pushed the envelope and influenced the online FPS scene for the next fourteen years.
