10 Video Games Accused Of Having Hidden Agendas

4. Capcom Is Racist Because Of Resident Evil 5

Regardless as to whether or not you personally thought Resident Evil 5 was inherently racist, the fact remains that many people accused Capcom of harbouring racist attitudes post-release. The issue became such a hot topic that Capcom€™s PR executive Melody Pfeiffer had to offer a statement regarding the issue:

"Since the RE5 controversy, we have become much more aware of how important it is that we are part of the asset creation process early on so that we are able to have a say in the end product. [...] We are working really closely with our producers in Japan to construct these materials for the West and they are open more then ever to hearing our thoughts and ideas for assets."

Of course, Capcom itself isn€™t a racist organisations; Resident Evil 5 may have been problematic in some ways, but accusing everyone behind the game of fostering racially charged resentment towards African cultures is beyond naive. If anything, Capcom just didn€™t put enough thought into how they represented a country and people they clearly didn€™t understand; they might be a bunch of idiots, but they€™re not the bigots that they were accused of being.
