10 Video Games It's Cool To Hate

3. Five Nights At Freddy's

Scott Cawthon was really onto something with this one. Five Nights At Freddy’s started as a simple game developed with Clickteam Fusion 2.5, eventually becoming a global media empire of its very own. There are companion novels, spin-offs, reams and reams of creepy action figures and merchandise besides… it was the pop culture sensation of the mid-2010s.

At the same time, though, it’s one of those series that you either get or you don’t. While the games themselves are quite simplistic (they were developed by just one man, after all), but there’s a wealth of intriguing and mysterious lore available for those who want to delve deeper into this sinister world. It’s much more than the sum of its horrifying animatronic parts, you could say.

Sadly, thanks to streamers and YouTubers who jibber like startled orangutans at every appearance of the animatronics, many gamers decide that this is all there is to Five Nights At Freddy’s: cheap jump scares.

Couple this with the fact that Cawthon became just a little too committed to pumping out the sequels as quickly as possible, and you can see why Five Nights At Freddy’s burnout may have seeped in, whether the negativity was deserved or not.
