10 Video Games Ruined By Excessive Grinding
4. Destiny
The original Destiny was hyped up as an expansive "shared world shooter" in which players would be able to explore lush planets, complete meaningful story quests, and hoover up loot.
One of those ended up being true at least, because while exploration was severely limited to small maps and the story was a brief bust, the only thing players had left to do outside of the Crucible was grind their asses off for that sweet, shiny loot.
Especially on launch, Destiny's wildly disappointing endgame was little more than a soulless, interminable grind-fest for gear that's incrementally superior at best.
To mitigate the grind, players took it upon themselves to seek out and exploit accidental "loot caves" for speedier acquisition of loot, but the caves were of course patched out of the game soon after they were discovered.
As much as Bungie promised Destiny 2 would expand the scope of its predecessor, the sequel has similarly been pilloried for its grind-reliant gameplay loop, hooking players with the promise of a potent dopamine hit whenever useful gear shows up.
