10 Video Games That Should’ve Quit While They Were Ahead

5. Resident Evil

With Capcom itself admitting that the Resident Evil franchise has become a bloated, disfigured monstrosity on par with the increasingly bulbous freaks seen in the games themselves - well, the studio's exact words were "it's undeniable to say the series returning to its roots is important," but we're extrapolating here - it's become painfully clear that the IP has lost its mojo, to say the least. What began as a clunky yet enthralling and above all terrifying experience found its foothold with Resident Evil 4 on the PlayStation 2 - widely regarded as the best of the series even today. Ever since that quintessential release, however, things have been in a slump. Resident Evil 5, while an enjoyable source of co-op shenanigans, distanced itself from the canon and began the rapid influx of action-based gameplay which continued into the disjunctive mess that is Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil: Revelations was a brief peak in the otherwise derelict trough, but with the franchise's next project being the infinitely ambitious remake of a remake of a remake, the RE7 outlook is bleak indeed.
