10 Video Games That Deserve A Remake

2. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

final fantasy IX 9
Nintendo

One of my personal favourites, the GameCube exclusive launched in 2002 with an excellent story, great cast of characters and phenomenal gameplay. Taking control of a range of playable characters over a timespan of hundreds of years, each has their own part to play in unravelling the mystery of the Tome of Eternal Darkness, giving heroine Alex Roivas the information she needs in the present day. The excellent combat was combined with a revolutionary Magick system, allowing for many different styles of play.

The game’s main hook, however, was the wonderful Sanity mechanics, in which a playable character’s sanity levels would reduce upon seeing a monster, only being restored by killing the creature with a powerful finishing move.

As the sanity meter dipped, the game would begin screwing with the player, with such effects as reversing controls, causing the walls to bleed, turning an entire room upside down or even pretending to erase your save data.

The fourth wall would not protect you.

Unfortunately, the game suffered from being released on GameCube, resulting in not many people playing it, as stellar reviews did not translate into sales for Nintendo’s humble cube. Attempts to crowdsource a sequel ended badly, but a game this innovative deserves to be revived. Perhaps if the Nintendo Switch aims to capture a more mature audience than the big N has a reputation for, this could be part of the strategy.
