Tutorials can be a tricky business in video games; while it's important to get players familiarised with how your title works, there are countless pitfalls they can fall into. They can be too long and over-encompassing or too short and ill-equipped to prepare the player for challenges ahead. Alternatively you can take the easy road and have little to no tutorials at all, leaving the player to work it out all on their own.

The following ten releases were criticised for their lack of clarity in their opening moments. While not severely damaging to their overall quality, they certainly didn't make a great first impression with tutorials as non-existent as these. Some players worked their way into these titles over time, others had to wait for helpful tips and advice videos to release on the internet. Whether it was adding a tutorial in later or the efforts of online communities to make titles more noob-friendly, these ten how-to-play guides arrived belatedly, causing many a headscratcher for new players at .

10. The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings

Let's start with the most obvious game of the bunch; while The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was a great improvement over the original and steered the franchise towards the critical acclaim it would reach with the third entry. One of its biggest flaws however was the lack of a tutorial mode. A good portion of players who bought the game were surprised to see the game throw Geralt straight into the assault on La Valette Castle, giving them no time to get to grips with the updated combat system. The white-haired monster slayer battled his way through heavily armed soldiers and later a deadly dragon, with few pointers in sight to help newcomers along. Combine this with a high level of difficulty and you had a very unforgiving opening.

CD Projekt Red would eventually add a tutorial a year later with the Enhanced Edition, which saw release on both PC and Xbox 360. Addressing previous criticisms was a worthy endeavour on the developer's part but the helping hand given to players wasn't exactly the finest effort as players bemoaned its tacky, thrown-together nature. Luckily its 2015 follow-up, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had none of these issues with its opening segments.
