10 Video Games That Immediately DEVASTATE You

1. The Last Of Us

It’s a pretty obvious one but what list on emotional devastation is complete without The Last of Us? A game famous for making players cry before they’ve even really gotten started...

The prologue opens in modern day America with Joel and daughter Sarah hanging out late at home on Joel’s birthday in a sweet, simple and all too normal scene. However, things take a turn when the neighbour Jimmy forces his way into their home and Joel has to shoot him. The tension in the music and the performance makes the scene incredibly uncomfortable and it’s all too easy to feel concern for these two characters you've barely met.

Pandemonium erupts in the early hours as an infection spreads and local police try to enforce a containment, stopping Joel and Sarah during their escape. A lone soldier opens fire and Joel’s daughter dies in his arms.

This opening sets up the tone and the cinematic direction that The Last of Us would promise and then deliver on. Rightfully looked at as one of the best openings to any video game, it just so happens to be one of the most emotionally crushing. It not only informs Joel’s personality moving forward but really puts the player in the right mindset that it's kill or be killed in The Last of Us’ post-apocalypse.
