5. Tomb Raider

It's fair to say that the Tomb Raider franchise has rather glossed over the fact that protagonist Lara Croft is a bit of a douchebag, an upper-class emblem of colonialism who travels the world pilfering ancient artefacts from their rightful places for her own gain and amusement.

The games are incredibly fun, no question, though the flippancy with which the series has allowed players to tamper with richly storied civilisations and their priceless possessions is troubling to say the least.

To its recent credit, Shadow of the Tomb Raider did at least attempt to engage with the idea that Lara's not such a great person after all, with various tribal figures questioning Lara's globe-trotting behaviour, and even the game's own main antagonist taking Lara to task for lifting objects that don't belong to her.

But of course, by game's end Lara is re-imagined as a white saviour who, per the requirements of an enduring franchise, probably won't stop stealing s**t anytime soon.
