10 Video Games That Punish You For Being Smart
1. Fallout 3 Makes You "Fulfil Your Destiny"
Fallout 3 is a pretty good game, but it's not a good RPG. At least in the conventional sense, Bethesda's sequel pales in comparison to other entries in the series when it comes to allowing you to truly role-play, pick an interesting build, and make difficult choices that all have consequences.
Case in point: the game's ending, which tasks the player with walking into a radioactive area in order to finish the main quest. Now, the title does its best to stress that you're the only person who can accomplish this task and in doing so, you'll succumb to radiation sickness and die.
The caveat here and where the smart play comes in is that at this pivotal point, you might actually have super mutant Fawkes as your companion. And if you know your Fallout lore, the thing about super mutants is that they're immune to radiation.
Putting two and two together, a lightbulb sparked in many a player, who asked Fawkes if they could head into the room and finish the job. After all, it'll kill you, but they won't even get a dicky tummy. It's here where the punishment comes in though, as Bethesda were so committed to their sacrifice ending that Fawkes outright says no, telling you that your "destiny lies within that chamber".
What kind of BS is that, Fawkes?! In the story it makes no sense, and as a roadblock in an RPG, it's unforgivable.
