10 Video Games That Put Fans In Denial
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V may well be the most incredible disappointment in video game history: a mechanically sublime technical masterpiece which nevertheless left fans hugely underwhelmed by its piecemeal, incomplete story.
Due to friction between director Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami, the game was effectively released unfinished, without Kojima having completed a planned third chapter to wrap the story up.
For years after release, however, fans had duped themselves into believing that this was merely part of Kojima's master plan, and that the third chapter was simply waiting to be unlocked after all players disposed of their nuclear weapons as part of the game's Nuclear Disarmament Event.
Ultimately, this was proven untrue when the event was finally triggered in 2018, confirming that despite his obvious genius as an artist, not even the great Kojima was this much of a Machiavellian mastermind.
Five years on from its release, fans continue to debate the game's merits, some appreciating its best-of-class stealth-action gameplay above all else, while others lament what could have been.
