10 Video Games That Put Fans In Denial
1. The Last Guardian
To be clear, The Last Guardian is by no stretch of the imagination a bad game, but it is one which required a heap of fan forgiveness to fully enjoy.
Team Ico's follow-up to their acclaimed smash hit Shadow of the Colossus was in development for almost a decade, during which production shifted from the PS3 to the PS4, and for several years of silence fans genuinely wondered if it had been quietly cancelled.
But The Last Guardian was finally released in December 2016, receiving strong praise for its gorgeous art style and emotional story, even if many criticised it for its frustratingly archaic gameplay, inconsistent A.I., and imprecise controls.
Many fans found themselves able to hand-wave the jank on the basis that it realistically reflected how challenging it would be for a human boy to communicate with a mystical creature, even if others saw it as emblematic of a game caught between generations and suffering accordingly.
For hardcore Team Ico followers, it simply wasn't possible to accept that The Last Guardian was anything but exactly the game director Fumito Ueda wanted to make, no matter the countless delays and numerous reports of its difficult production.
It is far more likely a product of intense toil and compromise, and that is why the end result is so rough around the edges despite its many merits.
