10 Video Games We Still Can't Believe Got Cancelled
1. Agent
Rockstar’s proposed title, Agent, was undoubtedly destined to be a smash hit. The concept sounded phenomenal. We’d take on the role of a secret intelligence agent, during the 1970s Cold War era, with Rockstar describing the story as “a paranoid journey into the world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations.”
Rockstar were also advertising the game as being developed by the people who brought us Grand Theft Auto. It’s a genuine struggle to think of who on earth wouldn’t want to play this. Spies? Check. The '70s? Check. Fantastic writers? Check.
So, what happened to this sure-fire winner? Probably Grand Theft Auto V, in the end.
Whilst Agent first began development in 2007, numerous issues around development of other titles, IP disputes, and lack of confidence from executives caused the PlayStation 3 exclusive to be delayed repeatedly. The real killer, however, would have been when team members were taken off the project to work on GTAV.
Between Grand Theft Auto IV and V, Rockstar developed two DLCs for IV, Chinatown Wars, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire (with Team Bondi) and Max Payne 3. Since GTA V, we’ve only had Red Dead Redemption 2.
As the scale and popularity of these IPs increases, so does the workload required for developing them. This means that, for titles like Agent, they've probably been silently assassinated in a dark room.
