10 Video Games Where The Bad Ending Is Canon
9. Fatal Frame I & II
The Fatal Frame franchise loves grim endings enough that it canonised them not once but twice.
The original survival horror game had three endings, with the bleakest being the normal ending accessed by most players, where protagonist Miku's brother Mafuyu sacrifices himself, staying behind with Kirie's spirit and sealing the Hell Gate, in turn preventing dark forces from crossing over into the living world.
This ending is confirmed to be canon in Fatal Frame III: The Tormented, where Miku returns as a playable character mourning the loss of her brother.
And now let's skip back to Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, which offers up more sibling-centric trauma in several endings - especially the Crimson Butterfly ending, where protagonist Mio is put in a trance and strangles her twin sister Mayu to death, completing a ritual used to appease hellish underworld forces.
Again, Fatal Frame III confirms this ending to be canon, revealing that Mio is unsurprisingly racked with trauma over her sister's death and the role she played in it.
