10 Video Games Where You Were Doomed From The Start

9. Eternal Sonata

Metal Gear Solid
Namco Bandai

As a strange game starring a man who believes he's dreaming, and a girl who has magic and so is terminally ill, you'd be forgiven for going into Eternal Sonata feeling as though the cards are perhaps not in your favour.

And at the end of the game, they're revealed to be even less in your favour, as it turns out the entire world you've existed in is a dream, that protagonist Chopin (yes, that Chopin) is having to try and come to terms with the fact he is dying. So, when you "win" the game, all you actually do is kill him off, as he finally deals with his mortality and passes away.

Which means, in effect, all of your painstakingly battle efforts just result in the death of one of the main characters, which is kind of twisted all things considered.

Though it's played off as a not entirely sad ending, you still can easily find yourself a little taken aback that the nature of your quest was actually a sort of prolonged suicide mission.
