5. Don’t Starve

We can’t have a permadeath list without a good old open world survival game. In Don’t Starve, you must keep Wilson the scientist healthy, happy and mentally stable throughout the game as he fights to escape from a randomly generated horror world.

The initial few days is such a slow grind that it can make dying in the later weeks especially painful when you realise you have to begin all over again. It becomes more about luck, finding the right materials when you need them and making sure they are close to your base camp.

If you don’t manage to save up enough food for winter then it’s an excruciating, agonising slow death followed by being dumped all the way back at the beginning grind. Urgh.
