10 Video Games The Fans Saved From Their Own Developers

5. The Dark Engine Is Restored From Almost Nothing

Dark Engine is the game engine that Looking Glass Studios used to make such classic games as Thief, Thief II and System Shock 2. When the company went under in 2000 they took the engine with them and made it much more difficult for fans to perform more ambitious updates to those classic titles. However, in 2012 an unofficial updated version of the Dark Engine began to make its rounds on the internet. Reportedly the initial code came from a hacked Dreamcast development system that so happened to contain information pertaining to ports of Dark Engine based games to the Dreamcast. Fans were able to take that information and reverse engineer the entire engine. The end result of this project was DromEd; a Dark Engine level editor that allowed fans to create new content for their beloved Looking Glass Studios games. It also serves as a substantial reminder that the gaming community does not like to be told they can€™t have something.
