7. The Red-Level Kills - Manhunt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ACO58cFUtA There's nothing like a creative team with a heap of cash to pour into something that's custom-built to annoy as many people as possible to get the blood up. Rockstar are an incredibly gifted studio, and regardless of what you think of the GTA series' world dominating sales records, you can't deny they do things on their own terms. When it comes to creative direction, PR hype and social media responses - for better or worse so far everything's worked in their favour, but their most controversial and downright disgusting(ly brilliant) title has always been Manhunt. Although it received a sequel that would attempt to flesh out more of an overarching personal story to go alongside all the killing, it's the first game that made the most waves, being you played as one James Earl Cash; a death row criminal given a second lease on life providing he 'act' in a series of snuff films for Lionel Starkweather. 'Acting' of course being our term for 'dismembering other people in the most horrific ways possible. From sickles to plastic bags, hammers and even a chainsaw, every weapon 'rewards' the player with a more gruesome animation providing you can hang around behind your enemy long enough for the reticule to turn red. This led to a great risk-reward system where the fruits of your labour ended up being horror film-fan-style reactions comprised mostly of wincing and sucking air in through gritted teeth each time.
