We can agree that there were a little bit too many herding missions in RDR. However, we can also agree that if there's a mission type that GTA V had too much of, it's the tow-truck stuff.

For every memorable side mission in GTA, there was another towing job for Tonya or hunting mission for Cletus. Red Dead certainly had missions that were less action-packed than others, but they would then lead into ones like 'I Know You' that offer an entirely unique set of circumstances.

Missions like 'I Know You' helped give side missions in RDR challenging themes and additional depth that would be absent otherwise. These side missions offer questions of morality in which no 'right answer' is given to the player, as well as an examination on the dangers of choosing religious faith over practicality.

Red Dead had many challenging themes, and the side missions were the showcases for the 'discussion' of said themes. With GTA, you have side missions that offer variety and entertaining characters outside of the main story. In RDR, side missions offer tough questions and crushing realism at certain moments. The effectiveness of those moments makes these side missions feel every bit as essential to the player as the main story, which will surely continue in the sequel.
