10 Worst Boss Battles In Final Fantasy History - Ranked

5. Elder Wyrm – Final Fantasy XII

Now considering the Elder Wyrm is directly preceded by Tiamat – who itself is considerably more powerful than the previous boss fight – the party is already likely to have struggled coming into this battle.

Having ground your way to defeating Tiamat, the even tougher Elder Wyrm – with 1.5x HP as Tiamat – hits you again and again with Sporefall. This attack inflicts multiple status effects, including confuse, poison, and – worst of all – oil. While the former effects will slowly kill your party while they go about killing each other on behalf of the wyrm, you might get lucky and one party member will be spared so you can cast Esuna and heal the afflicted members.

However, even an unconfused party member covered with oil will die in one hit when Elder Wyrm follows up its attack with Fireball, instantly killing everyone.

There are a number of strategies online to try and help ease the pain of this battle, but it ultimately comes down to even more grinding, backtracking for some status-cancelling items, and a whole lot of luck.
