10 Worst Boss Battles In Final Fantasy History - Ranked

2. Necron – Final Fantasy IX

The final boss battle of FFIX against Necron isn't the worst battle in the series – though, besides one or two status-inflicting attack, he isn't a huge threat. The main reason this battle is so unpopular with fans is because of how wholly unnecessary it is.

Now in his trance mode, Kuja is more powerful than at any other point in the game – each time of which he kicked our asses – as he does so again. Despite an epic showdown, an amazing score, and the exchange between Zidane and Kuja, Kuja ultimately wins, virtually killing everyone in the vicinity.

We're then plunged into a battle for the survival of...ourselves? The planet? The universe? We don't really know. We're just suddenly told to fight for our survival against some being that has never even been mentioned before now. It makes for a confusing fight that derails the end plot of the game.

After winning, fans enjoy the usual end-game FMV where we see what happens to our party after the fighting stops – and it would all have been exactly the same if Necron hadn't been there at all, but instead had ended with the great showdown with Kuja.
