Notable Launch Games: Centipede Tetris DX Pocket Bomberman Game & Watch Gallery 2 The Game Boy was more than a great handheld system, it was the handheld system that proved the entire concept of mobile gaming was viable. Even more impressive was the fact the Game Boy was able to showcase its greatness right at launch as games like Super Mario Land and Tetris quickly turned it into one of the most successful pieces of gaming hardware ever made. Perhaps Nintendo felt that the name value of the Game Boy brand was able to stand on its own by the time that the Game Boy Color released in 1998 because they certainly weren't selling it based on the quality of the games it arrived with. It's a good thing that the Game Boy Color could play original Game Boy games because otherwise the fact that the Color only included four "new" games at launch and three of them were essentially colorized versions of retro games would have been especially embarrassing. As the only real blight in the otherwise stellar history of Game Boy launch lineups, the Game Boy Color's launch is perhaps the biggest example of Nintendo at its laziest.
