10 Worst Things Warner Bros. Games Have EVER Done
6. Turning MultiVersus From A Surprise Hit Into A Total Failure
Warner Bros. have never been a company to shy away from synergy between their various brands (just check out the last Space Jam movie), but nowhere is this more apparent than in free-to-play crossover game MultiVersus. A slightly less egregious IP cash-in than the likes of Funko Fusion, the game pits characters from DC, Looney Tunes, Game of Thrones, Adventure Time, Gremlins, The Matrix and others against each other in a fighting game built in the image of Super Smash Bros.
MultiVersus enjoyed a hugely successful beta launch, but took a massive break and, when players returned, progress and earned currency had been wiped. Bad enough, but that was the beginning of the problems.
Despite mixed reviews from the get, MultiVersus was at one point the most-played game on Steam, and yet the developers failed to listen to what the community genuinely wanted and needed. The audience was there, invested and receptive, but WB treated this as an easy win, relying on the combination of well-known IP and a live-service platform to rake in the cash. More fool them…
Their expectation of players to pour currency into the game’s many purchase points while failing to give them the characters, features and updates they requested backfired big time. The company failed to make anything like the money they wanted, and called time on the game just a year after its full release - with MultiVersus being delisted and taken offline in 2025.
