3. Copyrighting (& Then Doing Nothing With) Middle-earth's Nemesis System
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis System makes it a cut above the rest, offering exciting gaming experiences in which enemy orcs remember you, remember your decisions, and return with the scars and deformities of previous fights, as well as seeking to avenge their fallen comrades. This means no two games are the same, and that unique gameplay can be found even after completing the game in its entirety.
This system was used again in the sequel Shadow of War, upping the ante with additional generative abilities for the creation of enemy characters and more complex hierarchies of power. But since then (2017), Warner Bros. Games has shut down developer Monolith, and squatted on the system like a fat toad. As Warner holds the license and patents for Monolith’s engines and systems - until 2036! - the Nemesis system is likely to remain locked away for another 11 years with what is, if we’re being honest, an increasingly uninventive company (per CBR).
This means gamers may not see the system put to use at all, and even if we do, it could be in some cack-handed disaster that Warner has identified as its next big money-making venture...
