100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
49. Code: Veronica Is The First RE Game With A Canon Ending
Even if you've only a passing interest in Resident Evil, you won't be surprised to hear that since the remakes started there's been a lot of controversy amongst some hardcore fans about which games truly represent the story. Frankly Capcom seem to have a pretty fluid interpretation of the Resident Evil plot themselves.
This isn't exactly a new thing, either. This is more of an open secret but it's one you might not have realised: the first Resident Evil game to have an actual canonical ending is Code: Veronica.
In the original RE, the game's ending depends on multiple different factors. Whilst it's storyline that Chris, Jill, Barry and Rebecca all make it out of the Spencer Mansion, there's never a version of this shown on-screen. Chris' game completely omits Barry, and Jill does the same with Rebecca. In RE2, it's never been 100% determined which pair of the game's four scenarios (Claire A to Leon B or vice versa) happens since all of them tie into future events.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis has three different endings and none of them have ever been decree'd by Capcom as the "actual" ending, as the only things that matter are Jill and Carlos escaping the city. Heck, even Survivor features choices that affect the outcome of the some of the final events of the game.
Code: Veronica is the first game to be a straight-shot with only one ending. It took Capcom five times to actually have a game that plays out exactly as it does on screen!
