100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
33. Barry's Wife
Alongside the development of the early games, Capcom also had a contract for a series of novels written by S.D. Perry.
Perry has said in multiple interviews that production was hectic, that deadlines were tight and that she could only work with information provided. As the video game stories evolved game-to-game, she often found her books contradicting plot reveals that would happen in the next one - such as mentioning Jill Valentine leaving Raccoon City in her RE2 book, only to have to backtrack on that when Resident Evil 3 got revealed.
However, she also broke some new ground that has had an impact on the series.
Whilst she's wrongly accredited with the Tyrant's nickname "Mr X" (this actually was first used in a third party strategy guide licensed by Capcom), she was at least the first person to state that Chris and Claire are orphans, which was later canonised in Code: Veronica.
If you think that's a coincidence, then the next one should win you over. Whilst RE1 names Barry Burton's daughters Moira and Polly it never mentions the man's wife, and so Perry picked the name Cathy for her novelisation. Nearly twenty years later, in Revelations 2, Barry's return to the franchise indeed confirmed that his wife is Cathy Burton.
