100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil

24. The Meaning of Majini

Resident Evil 5 Uroboros

It's fairly common knowledge that the Las Plagas victims in Resident Evil 4 are called the Ganado because it's Spanish for cattle, which is a pretty chilling way to refer to an indigenous population that you've come along and turned into your mind-controlled army.

Similarly then, the infected in the Kijuju region of Africa in Resident Evil 5 are given a unique name in Majini. This comes from the Swahili word - the native tongue of Kijuju, as it turns out - "jini" from the Arabic "jinn". This refers to supernatural, often demonic, spirits.

Pretty fitting.
