Eve Online is a massive, shipbuilding MMO that was released in 2003 and is still played today. In 2007, Eve released an expansion pack called Trinity.

The community was very excited about this as it promised many features that had been asked for and it was free to all members, what’s not to love? However, the expansion had a big problem.

With the installation of the new expansion, certain people’s computers were having their Boot.Ini file deleted. This is a very important file that controls Windows Operating system during start-up, and the computer cannot start normally without it.

It was impacting people that used Windows XP and only updated Eve without fully reinstalling it, this, however, was a lot of people. Eve quickly responded with an article by Dr. Erlendur S. Thorsteinsson who apologised for the error and tried to answer the player's questions.

Eve commented they only received complaints form 215 users and that they reimbursed all those who were impacted by this error. It was reported by some users that their hardware was even replaced by the company.

The bad press remained, as even today when an error is found in-game, the community makes the joke that it “isn’t as bad as Boot.Ini".
