The 15/16 season was the campaign that Britain fell in love with Jamie Vardy.

Everyone loves a rags-to-riches story, so when Vardy, who had notched just five league goals the previous campaign and was nearly flogged to Sheffield Wednesday following the sacking of Nigel Pearson, morphed into one of the deadliest strikers in the country, the nation was dumbstruck.

The last time the pacey hitman bagged as many goals as he did last season (24), he had been playing for Fleetwood Town in the Conference Premier - and even that was only four seasons ago. The striker was a must-have in every Fantasy League team, especially during his record-breaking 11-game goalscoring break before Christmas. So it makes sense that the Foxes frontman should be one of the first picks in your team ahead of the new season, correct? Not so.

Not to rain on the Vardy parade, but the Sheffield-born striker will turn 30 this season. Don’t be surprised if his motor slows by a fraction, especially with the addition of European games the Foxes now have. Defences will now be better prepared for the Leicester juggernaut, and Vardy in particular.

No longer will there be any naive high lines goading the frontman into a breakneck race towards the goal. The element of surprise is gone - as champions, Leicester will be shown a level of respect that was not there last season, and as such Vardy might have to adapt his game if he is to sniff out some goals.

Priced at £10.0, the former Stocksbridge Park Steels flyer is simply not worth the risk.
